Our Founder

The late Mr. Ghulam Faruque Khan, HPk, CIE, Commander of the Order of Merit of Spain, OBE, was a prominent and respected pioneer in the industrial and political circles of Pakistan, who founded the Ghulam Faruque Group and oversaw its successful growth and development based on the values he espoused.

Career in Public Service

Mr. Ghulam Faruque began his professional journey in 1921 with the Bengal–Nagpur Railway, rising to become the first Muslim General Manager of East Indian Railways from 1946 to 1948.

Following the independence of Pakistan in 1947, he moved to the new country and quickly became a key figure in shaping its industrial and economic landscape.

His major roles included:

  • Coal Manager – Bengal Nagpur Railway (1938)
  • Transport Advisory Officer – Railway Board and War Transport Board (1941)
  • Coal Commissioner – Railway Board and War Transport Board (1942)
  • Secretary – Industries Division (1948–1949)
  • Chairman – Pakistan Jute Board & Cotton Board (1949–1952)
  • Founding Chairman – Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) (1952–1958)
  • Chairman – Pakistan Ordnance Factory and Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) (1958–1961)


Political Career

In 1962, Mr. Ghulam Faruque was appointed Governor of East Pakistan, serving from 11 May to 28 October before stepping down due to political unrest.

His long and distinguished political career included stints as:

  • Federal Minister for Commerce and Defence Advisor (1965–1967)
  • Minister for Finance – Planning and Development, NWFP (1971–1973)
  • Chairman – Investment Corporation of Pakistan (ICP) (1982–1992)
  • Member – Majlis-e-Shoora (1982–1985)
  • Senator (1985–1992)

Notably, he remained undefeated in every election he contested

In recognition of his services to the public and industrial sectors, Mr. Ghulam Faruque received numerous national and international honors:
